Sara Giannini is a curator, writer, and educator based in Amsterdam. With a background in theatre studies and semiotics, her curatorial research explores the interplay between language and performativity to interrogate normative modes of knowledge production and transmission. Across formats and roles, she is committed to collaboration and remaining porous to different forms of relationalities, interdependencies, and temporalities Sara is currently a core member of the curatorial team at If I Can’t Dance, I Don’t Want To Be Part Of Your Revolution, where she develops art and research commissions in collaboration with artists, writers, and other practitioners working in the field of performativity. Prior to this, she worked at the ZKM | Karlsruhe with the Global Art and the Museum programme (2010–2013), and has initiated collaborative projects such as the online library Unfold and the curatorial platform Heterotropics. As a Fellow at the Van Abbemuseum (2016/17), she explored aphasic language and scoring in relation to the archive of Dutch artist René Daniëls. In 2018, she was Curator in Residence at the Bard College Center for Curatorial Studies (NY), where she researched ecstasy and non-identity within feminist histories. With If I Can’t Dance, she published Maquillage as Meditation: Carmelo and the Undead (2021), a script of an absent event evoking the (not always benevolent) spirit of Italian actor, director, and writer Carmelo Bene. Sara has taught at institutions such as the Dutch Art Institute, KABK The Hague, DasArts, SNDO, and the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam.
