1 publisher, 6 authors: Set Margins’ presents at Bungee Space NY

April 24th, Wed, 6:30-8:30PM

This modest evening is a big yes! to progressive and thoughtful culture! Celebrating 1.5 years of Set Margins’ publications, Dutch publisher Freek Lomme and authors Silvio Lorusso, Kevin Yuen Kit Loo, Simona Bortis-Schulz, Daniel Tucker, Ian Callender and others–many based in the NY region–will each briefly introduce their work and celebrate new titles!

Founded in 2022, Set Margins’ publications is a support structure, a platform for production, a network and publisher, offering discourse and dialogue through art and design. Built on Freek Lomme’s two-decade experience as founder and director of Onomatopee, Set Margins’ creatively applies the cultural politics of content, form, and style whilst critically disseminating a marginal cultural agenda, Set Margins’ mobilizes community, articulates qualities to widen support, and steps up for liberties.

Book launch – Doris Boerman: Plugs, Pores, Walls & Lures

Book launch!

With the series of sculptures titled ‘Plugs, Pores, Walls and Lures’, visual artist Doris Boerman responds to the practice of self-design as a form of mass occupation, common identity and pseudo individuality in popular culture. With hair, earrings, scrunchies, wall plugs and gallery walls, the series talks about the feminine as a commercially constructed value, as well as the normative female body and its role in (art) history.

Alongside the series of sculptures Doris Boerman presents three accompanying texts especially written for this publication: Fashion researcher Femke de Vries wrote an essay about self-design as a mass cultural practice, celebrities as designed surfaces and strategies of disclosure to restore trust in this ‘unreal’ system. The poem by lesbian artist, LGBTQIA+ activist and poet Joëlle Sambi compares the black woman’s skull to a battlefield on which normative and repressive standards are a constant battle to fight against whilst remaining proud and strong. Finally, the essay by visual artist and writer Timmy van Zoelen stages a dance around Doris’ sculptures by way of the curvature of her spinal column; taking the backbone for a spin in a series of playful references. These contributions respond to the series of sculptures with a wide range of topics and create a relevant network for further deliberation.

Book launch ‘What Design Can’t Do’

Join us on Saturday 18 November for the launch of new book by Silvio Lorusso entitled What Design Can’t Do, followed by a discussion with Silvio and Rotterdam based collective Extra-Practice and Clara Balaguer.

Design is broken. Young and not-so-young designers are becoming increasingly aware of this. Many feel impotent: they were told they had the tools to make the world a better place, but instead the world takes its toll on them. This book probes the disillusionment that permeates design. To depict this disheartening crisis, he crafts a new critical vocabulary for readers to build upon.

There will also be delicious tajines by De Duurzame Wereldkeuken available after the book launch, as the opening of Occult Economics begins.

In Thoughts, Together: craft, tradition, cosmopolite life’ as a nod to the book.

Set Margins’ is developing a book with Swedish designer Fadhel Mourali. In his work, Fadhel combines traditional Swedish craft, personal history and diversity, where his great-grandfather was a skilled basket maker, and he himself is a contemporary designer of mixed origin. Alongside the exhibition at Form/Design Center Malmo, featuring his work, Freek Lomme (Set Margins’) and Fadhel will present work, and discuss pathways through craft, bookmaking, storytelling and engagement.

We hope for nice openings in ideas and imaginings together; feel free to join if you are around. Freek might also bring books to show, and to sell.

This event is made possible thanks to the generous support of Svensk Form, IASPIS and Form/Design Center

Book Launch ‘Virophilia’

Virus cookbook presentation by Pei-Ying Lin “Virophilia: The 2070 revised edition of the Postnatural Cookbook” & tasting of some of the recipes prepared by CHAxARTxRTM

The graphic designer, Lisa Ladent, and Set Margins’ Freek Lomme will also be present.

The launch is part in the Printroom program ‘Books Are Bridges Art Book Fest‘, which is part of the second Books Are Bridges Publishing Summit, that brings together and links international and local publishing platforms to exchange ideas and strengthen the support structures that we build to create a publishing community.

What models do we use to gather around publishing and zine-making and what do we wish to develop in the coming years? How can we (continue to) provide space and attention for not-so-loud voices? Together we will reflect on how to maintain and grow our networks and care for ourselves, so that we can continue to nourish our communities. Three days to share time and care: to think, make and play together during workshops, shared meals, presentations, conversations, and a Fabulous Art Book Fest.

The Books Are Bridges Publishing Summit is developed by PrintRoom (Karin de Jong and team) in collaboration with Rose Nordin and Eleanor Vonne Brown. The title Books Are Bridges is inspired by the publishing practice of Claudia de la Torre. The logo is designed by José Quintanar. The flyer, poster and booklet are designed by Dongyoung Lee.

Book Launch ‘To Live As An Asian Woman’

Together with Limestone Books Maastricht we present:
‘Book Launch—’To live as an Asian Woman’ by Seulbin Roh

29 June 2023 (Thur.)
19:00—20:30
Location: Limestone Books Maastricht.

Seulbin Roh, an Asian woman born in Germany and residing in Europe, has experienced and observed instances of racist sexual objectification. Whenever she speaks out against such incidents, she finds that while most individuals stand in solidarity with her, some respond with aggression, either by scoffing or dismissing her. As an Asian female artist, Seulbin feels a strong sense of responsibility to address racial discrimination through her artwork. In ‘To Live As An Asian Woman’, she presents a compilation of racist and sexist comments that she has personally encountered. By doing so, she aims to raise awareness about the distressing and continual devaluation of the human dignity of Asian women, a reality that unfolds daily.

Seulbin Roh
make the paragraph shorter: Seulbin Roh’s artistic curiosity began when she faced a dilemma about her vulnerability. The question that it began with was, “Why am I fascinated by dynamic shapes and vivid colours?” The dilemma was closely related to her multicultural background. Moving to different countries as a child, she has always found herself a bit in-between. Missing the advantage of using her surroundings as a way to generate a sense of belonging for herself, she found a great tool to substantiate this quest for self-determination through making art.
