Lieven De Boeck

” I am an artist and architect. My practice touches upon many areas of contemporary art, whether they are conceived as a set of passive categories- like process art, the monochrome, minimal art, conceptual art, political art, environmental art, body art, participation and performance – or as burning and contested issues; the status of the object as communication or consumer identity; notions of authorship and the relations of artist to audience, questions of identity, sexuality, decolonization and cultural difference, the relationship between art and life. I see all these areas and issues as interconnected but within the specific frame of reference of giving a central place to the belief in the creative mind of the viewer.
My work can be seen as a research about language and space, from literature, art, architecture and urbanism to the relation with different strategies of organizing, distributing and handling information. My practice involves the relation between different disciplines and spaces and I’m very interested in how the context defines the meaning of a certain manifestation. For one hand, my work is concerned about the strategies to construct a context and how spaces can be appropriated by doing this and for the other side in trying to find new paths of reading within the given structures.
The rise of identity politics of the past have given voice to many that have been denied. And there is still so much work to be done: many voices are still marginalized and ignored. Every effort must be made to ensure that those who have something to say have a place to say it and an audience to hear it. The importance of this work cannot be underestimated. The current work of studio Lieven De Boeck aims to install such an environment of inclusion and bien-être.”
