As the relationship between animals and human developed, be it personal, industrial or otherwise, animals became more prominent, and the question rose how cohabit with animals and other terrestrials.

Symptomatic to this change, a shift has taken place in the visual representation of animals, from being used simply as an object, metaphor or symbol, or for its aesthetic qualities, to subject in and for itself. In contemporary art, the other-than-human animals now increasingly show themselves and gain voice. Serving all animals (including human), these more inclusive tones and vocabularies give rise to expressions and ideas for a new era.

This book, coming out of groundbreaking research, traces the historical changes in the inclusion of other-than-human animals, from use as object to inclusion as subject, and maps out how to listen, talk and be together on a more just basis. It uses (eco)feminist writing and the regime of relations (i.e. Care ethics or intersectionality) with the world to review art history and cultural conventions.

Articulating the voice of the other-than-human animals, this study uses many artist practices as a source, including those of Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Julie Andreyev, Minerva Cuevas, Terike Haapoja, Joan Jonas, Jenny Kendler, EvaMarie Lindahl, Isabella & Tiziana Pers, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, Rachel Rosenthal, Lin May Saeed, Sin Kabeza Productions, Bryndís Snæbjörnsdóttir & Mark Wilson.

Altogether, the book presents an alternative, ecocritical territory between art, affect, animal ethics and posthumanism: an era that we would prefer to name Ecocene rather than Anthropocene: eco- and zoo- poetic/political.
